What is an accessibility assessment?
Our accessibility assessments consist of a careful review of your website's accessibility, as well as a written report. Once the review has been conducted, and the report completed and handed in to you, we are available to discuss the results with you, or your technical team. Some organisation opt to arrange specific training for their technical team following the accessibility assessment.
The site is reviewed for compliance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), as well as Section 508 if it applies to your organisation. We answer questions such as these:
- Can people with vision impairment (or hearing impairments, or mobility impairment, or cognitive disabilities, etc) use your website?
- What level of WCAG 1.0 compliance does your site meet? Level A, Level AAA or Level AAA?
- Will your site meet WCAG 2.0?
- What can you do, concretely, to improve accessibility?
The assessments do not rely on automated testing engines. While several tools are used for testing, the final evaluation is done by an accessibility expert.
Assessment vs. Audit
We prefer to think in terms of accessibility assessment instead of accessibility audit. All too often, an audit implies a confrontational review, where the auditor attempts to "trip" you. This is not the approach we take. We work together to give you a fair assessment of your website's degree of accessibility.
Report structure
Each report is individualised to your needs, but the reports generally adhere to the following structure:
- Introduction
- General comments about the site
- What works, and what doesn't
- Issues found throughout the site
- What issues are common on many pages
- References to the accessibility guideline(s) affected (if applicable)
- Why these issues constitute barriers
- Suggestions to resolve these issues where possible
- Specific issues found on specific pages
- Why these issues constitute barriers
- References to the accessibility guideline(s) affected (if applicable)
- Suggestions to resolve these issues where possible
- Conclusion
